According to a PTI report, the BCCI will elect a new secretary to replace former secretary Jay Shah on January 12 during a Special General Meeting (SGM). Along with the new secretary, a new treasurer will also be elected following Ashish Shelar’s appointment as a cabinet minister in the newly formed Maharashtra government.

Shah served as BCCI secretary for five years starting in 2019 and was recently elected as the chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) on December 1, 2024. At 36, Shah became the youngest to chair the ICC and is the fifth Indian to hold the position.

As per the BCCI constitution, any vacant position must be filled within 45 days through a Special General Meeting (SGM). “Yes, after the Apex Council meeting on Thursday, state units received a notification about the SGM scheduled for January 12 at the BCCI headquarters,” a state association president told PTI.

The Lodha Committee reforms, which were approved by the Supreme Court, stipulate that one person cannot hold two positions. As a result, both Shah and Shelar stepped down from their roles. Currently, Assam’s Devajit Saikia is serving as the interim secretary, while the treasurer’s position remains vacant.

Following the announcement of Jay Shah’s appointment as ICC chairman, the names of Delhi District Cricket Association (DDCA) president Rohan Jaitley and Gujarat Cricket Association secretary Anil Patel began to circulate as potential replacements. However, a report from News18 suggested that Patel might be the dark horse for the role.

In the meantime, a BCCI document obtained by PTI revealed that the Apex Council has been asked to approve the appointment of Achal Kumar Jyoti, former Chief Election Commissioner of India, as the Electoral Officer to oversee the BCCI elections during the Special General Meeting.

Jyoti, 71, is a retired 1975 batch Gujarat cadre IAS officer who served as India’s Chief Election Commissioner from July 2017 to January 2018.
