Indian Players Don Black Armbands at Melbourne Cricket Ground: Here’s the Reason
The Indian cricket team donned black armbands on the second day of the fourth Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) to honor former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced while sharing pictures from the match.
Australia resumed their innings at 311 for 6. “The Indian team is wearing black armbands as a mark of respect in memory of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, who passed away,” the BCCI stated.
Dr. Manmohan Singh, who was 92 years old, passed away on Thursday in New Delhi. He breathed his last at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) following complications related to age.
The former Prime Minister, renowned for his pivotal role as an economist, spearheaded India’s landmark economic reforms in 1991. These reforms steered India away from the brink of bankruptcy and initiated an era of liberalization that transformed the nation’s economic trajectory.
Reports indicate that the government will announce seven days of national mourning. The Cabinet is set to meet at 11 a.m. to extend condolences, and Dr. Singh’s last rites will be conducted with full state honors.
