Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with world chess champion D. Gukesh on Saturday and shared a photo of their meeting on social media.

“Had an excellent interaction with chess champion and India’s pride, @DGukesh! I have been following his journey closely for the past few years, and what stands out most is his determination and dedication. His confidence is truly inspiring. I even recall watching a video from a few years ago where he predicted he would become the youngest world champion – a prediction that has clearly come true thanks to his hard work,” Modi wrote on X.

“Along with confidence, Gukesh exemplifies calmness and humility. Upon his victory, he remained composed, reflecting on his well-deserved success. Today, our conversation focused on the transformative potential of chess…”

“Every athlete’s success is largely attributed to the support of their parents. I praised Gukesh’s parents for standing by him through every challenge. Their unwavering dedication will serve as an inspiration to many parents of young aspirants who dream of making a career in sports,” he added.

Gukesh also gifted the Prime Minister the original chessboard from the final game of the World Chess Championship, which was signed by both him and Ding Liren.

“I am also thrilled to have received from Gukesh the original chessboard from the game he won. This chessboard, signed by both him and Ding Liren, is a treasured memento,” Modi shared.

“What left me utterly speechless during the meeting was when PM Sir began discussing my games, including the World Chess Championship! It felt truly surreal! I am at a loss for words to express my gratitude to PM Sir. Your encouraging words have filled me with a renewed sense of energy and motivation. Thank you once again, Sir, for being such an incredible role model and inspiring millions of Indians like me,” he expressed.

Earlier in December, Gukesh made history by becoming the youngest player ever to win the World Chess Championship, defeating 32-year-old Ding Liren at the age of 18.
