Berlin Police Arrest Man After Multiple Stabbings in Charlottenburg on New Year’s Eve
A man was detained by Berlin police on December 31 after allegedly attacking and injuring several people in the Charlottenburg area, as reported by AP. The police confirmed that two victims were hospitalized, and authorities are currently questioning witnesses. The full extent of the injuries and details about the attacker remain unclear.
Emergency services responded to the scene shortly before noon, where it was reported that the man had injured multiple people, likely with a knife, according to police posts on X.
The attacker, identified as a Syrian national residing in Sweden, may be suffering from mental health issues, and initial investigations suggest there is no indication of terrorism involved, police spokesperson Jane Berndt informed The Associated Press. The investigation is ongoing.
Before his arrest, local media reported that the man was attacking people at random inside and outside a grocery store. Several passersby intervened and restrained him until police arrived.
Charlottenburg, typically a quiet district in Berlin, has seen heightened security following the attack as the city prepares to ring in the New Year.
