‘If You Play Good Cricket, You Don’t Need PR’: MS Dhoni Shares His Views on Social Media
Former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is known for his reluctance to embrace social media, especially in an era where it dominates the sporting world. Despite repeated suggestions from his managers to stay active online, Dhoni maintained his stance that his cricketing performance would speak for itself.
“I have never been a big fan of social media. Over the years, I’ve had multiple managers who encouraged me to engage more online. I started playing in 2004, and platforms like Twitter and Instagram became popular later. But I always told them, ‘If you play good cricket, you don’t need PR,’” Dhoni said in a conversation with Eurogrip Tred Talks.
Dhoni is set to feature in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL), having been retained by Chennai Super Kings for Rs 4 crore. The franchise utilized the modified uncapped player retention rule, which includes internationals who haven’t played for India in the last five years or received a BCCI central contract in that period.
After leading CSK to their fifth IPL title in 2023, Dhoni passed the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the 2024 season, sparking speculation about his future. In October, during a promotional event, Dhoni hinted at continuing to play, stating, “I just want to enjoy whatever last few years of cricket I can play.” His retention by CSK all but confirmed his participation in the upcoming season.
