Google Testing Undo and Redo Features on Gboard for Android Beta: Report
Google is reportedly testing new Undo and Redo features for its Gboard app on Android, aimed at simplifying text editing for users. The latest beta version of Gboard (v14.9.06.x) introduces these options, allowing users to reverse or reinstate their edits easily.
Undo and Redo in Gboard
The development of these features was first noted in July 2023, but little progress was observed until now. According to a report by 9to5Google, the Undo and Redo shortcuts are located in the top strip of the keyboard and can be placed in the suggestions tab. This functionality enables users to retrieve deleted text and backtrack or redo their edits without hassle.
Interestingly, the memory of edits is retained even if the keyboard is minimized, provided the app remains open. However, closing and reopening the app refreshes the feature, and the options are then greyed out. Google plans to roll out this feature systemwide, potentially making it available across all apps where Gboard is the default keyboard.
The Undo and Redo options are currently being tested with a small group of beta users who are part of the Google Play Beta program. While not all beta features make it to the final public version, the rollout to beta users suggests that the feature may be widely available in the coming months.
Other Recent Gboard Features
This development follows recent updates to Gboard, including the integration of the Pixel Studio app, which allows Pixel users to create AI-generated stickers directly from the keyboard. Users can design these stickers in the My Projects library or through the new Stickers tab in Gboard. Additionally, the app now integrates with the Pixel Screenshots app, offering suggestions related to movies, music, products, and other text based on screenshot data.
