‘Very Thankful to Them’: PV Sindhu on Crowd Support After Winning Start at India Open
PV Sindhu expressed her happiness after starting the India Open with a victory on Tuesday, acknowledging the fans for their unwavering support.
“I’m very happy. First win of the new year. It was important for me to start with a win, especially on home ground. The crowd was incredible—they cheered for every point. Even when I was trailing, they kept encouraging me, saying, ‘Never mind, never give up.’ I’m very thankful to them. Overall, it’s been a great start,” Sindhu said post-match.
“Their support from the very beginning gave me a boost of confidence. I hope it continues,” she added.
On Tuesday, Sindhu defeated Sung Shuo Yun of Chinese Taipei 21-14, 22-20 in straight games. A day earlier, she had shared her goal of rediscovering joy in the sport that has given her so much, despite entering this year without an Olympic medal. She also highlighted a new chapter in her career under the guidance of a new coach.
Sindhu confirmed she is now training with Irwansyah, the former Indonesian men’s singles coach, who has recently joined the Indian team. Irwansyah, credited with the success of Indonesian stars Jonatan Christie and Anthony Ginting, will now serve as India’s women’s singles coach—a move also confirmed by BAI General Secretary Sanjay Mishra.
