PT Usha Calls for Restricting National Games Medal Events to Olympic, CWG, and Asian Games Disciplines
In recent editions of the National Games, the inclusion of indigenous regional sports as demonstration events has been a key feature, aimed at engaging local audiences and promoting regional sports culture. However, in the last edition, several of these sports were elevated to medal events by the Games Technical Conduct Committee (GTCC).
In an official statement, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha acknowledged the importance of regional sports but stressed the need to maintain a clear distinction between demonstration and medal events. She pointed out that National Games medalists are eligible for benefits such as job reservations in state and central government sectors, salary increments, and prize money. Given these incentives, she emphasized the importance of aligning medal events with disciplines recognized at major international competitions.
Usha further stated that restricting the National Games to sports included in the upcoming Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, and Asian Games would enhance the “competitive standard” and “uphold the integrity” of the event.
“IOA President Dr. PT Usha intends to present a proposal at the next General Assembly meeting to redefine the scope of medal sports at the National Games,” the IOA statement read.
After Kerala hosted the National Games in 2015, there was a seven-year gap before Gujarat staged the event in 2022. The upcoming edition will be held in Uttarakhand from January 28 to February 14.
