Meta’s ‘Community Notes’ Will Not Apply to Paid Ads, Says Report

Meta’s “Community Notes” feature, similar to the system used on Elon Musk-owned platform X, will not be applied to paid advertisements when it launches later this year, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters on Thursday.

According to the source, Community Notes on Meta Platforms will be enabled for organic content—posts that Meta has not been paid to promote. However, aspects of the program remain subject to change. The Wall Street Journal, which first reported the development, noted that brand and influencer organic posts might also be exempt from Community Notes when the feature initially rolls out.

Meta’s Workforce Reduction and Future Plans

“We are making the transition to Community Notes over the next couple of months in the United States, and as with any new product rollout, we will continuously evaluate and improve it throughout the year,” a Meta spokesperson said in a statement. The spokesperson also dismissed any claims about the feature’s functionality beyond what Meta has officially announced as speculation.

This move comes as part of Meta’s broader shift in handling political content. Last week, the company discontinued its U.S. fact-checking program and announced plans to introduce Community Notes ahead of the upcoming U.S. presidential inauguration.
