“Surya Would Have Been the X-Factor”: Suresh Raina on SKY’s Exclusion from Champions Trophy Squad

Former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina believes that Suryakumar Yadav’s inclusion in the Champions Trophy squad could have brought an “X-factor” to the team.

“Surya was a key player in the World Cup squad. He’s a 360-degree batsman who can score at a rate of nine runs per over at any stage. His ability to dominate the opposition and adapt to different batting positions makes him a game-changer. If he were part of the squad, he would have added that X-factor, and his absence will be felt. Now, the responsibility lies on the top three, who aren’t in great form,” Raina said on Star Sports Press Room.

Despite being named captain for the upcoming five-match T20I series against England, starting January 22 in Kolkata, Suryakumar was left out of India’s Champions Trophy squad. Another notable omission was pacer Mohammed Siraj.

“Siraj was in terrific form in Australia, but squad changes can be made until February 12. If Jasprit Bumrah isn’t fully fit, Siraj could be brought back. Harshit Rana has been impressive with his pace, bouncers, yorkers, and variations. Both he and Arshdeep Singh can bowl at the death, but I still believe Siraj would be the best replacement if Bumrah isn’t available,” Raina added.

Returning after an eight-year hiatus, the Champions Trophy will be played in a hybrid format, with India’s matches taking place in Dubai while the rest of the tournament will be held across three venues in Pakistan. India will kick off their campaign against Bangladesh on February 20, followed by group-stage clashes against Pakistan and New Zealand.
