R Ashwin on Rohit Sharma’s Form: “He Must Silence Critics with His Bat

Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has expressed concerns over Rohit Sharma’s current form, stating that the Team India captain must respond to his critics through his performances.

After a disappointing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where he opted out of the final Test in Sydney, Rohit’s struggles continued as he managed just two runs in the opening match of the three-game ODI series in Nagpur.

“This isn’t easy. From Rohit’s perspective, it must be frustrating,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel. “He needs to focus on the series. He believes he has performed well in this format and wants to continue that. But questions will always be asked. That’s inevitable.”

Earlier this week, Rohit appeared visibly irritated when asked about his form and future beyond the ICC Champions Trophy during a pre-match press conference.

“What kind of question is that? This is a different format, a different time. As cricketers, we experience ups and downs—I’ve faced plenty in my career, so this is nothing new to me. Every day is a fresh start, every series is a fresh challenge,” Rohit responded.

The Indian captain’s reaction was uncharacteristic, given his usual composed approach in press conferences. Even after India’s collapse for 46 against New Zealand last year, he had faced the media with his usual calm demeanor.

Addressing speculation about his future, Rohit dismissed the rumors, saying, “How is it relevant for me to discuss my future plans here when we have three ODIs and a Champions Trophy ahead? These reports have been around for years, but I’m not here to clarify them. My focus is on these upcoming matches—we’ll see what happens after that.”

India will play their second ODI against England in Cuttack on Sunday.
