OpenAI Begins Rolling Out Its Operator AI Agent in Multiple Regions
On Friday, OpenAI started rolling out its AI agent, Operator, to several countries. Previously available only to ChatGPT Pro users in the US in preview since January, the tool is now expanding to a broader audience. Operator is a general-purpose AI agent equipped with a dedicated browser, allowing it to autonomously carry out online tasks based on user prompts. While it is now available in several major regions, OpenAI has stated that it will not be accessible in European countries at this time.
In an announcement on X (formerly Twitter), OpenAI revealed that Operator will now be accessible to ChatGPT Pro users in Australia, Brazil, Canada, India, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, the UK, and other locations where ChatGPT is available. However, European countries, including the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Liechtenstein, and Iceland, will have to wait a little longer before gaining access.
At launch, OpenAI explained that Operator is powered by the Computer-Using Agent (CUA), an AI model with computer vision capabilities from GPT-4 and advanced reasoning from another OpenAI model, possibly the o3 model. This agent was post-trained using reinforcement learning techniques.
CUA has the ability to interact with graphical user interfaces (GUIs) like buttons, menus, and text fields on the screen. The AI agent also features a dedicated browser to perform tasks in a separate space, allowing users to focus on other activities. Operator can process both text and images as input, analyzing raw pixel data and using a virtual keyboard and mouse in its sandbox environment to complete multi-step tasks. It is designed to navigate errors and adapt to unforeseen situations.
