“This has been a long-time dream of mine to organize and bring a world-class javelin event to India,” Neeraj Chopra shared. “With the support of JSW Sports and the Athletics Federation of India, we are making it happen. I’m confident that the athletes and the fans in India will create an unforgettable experience. I’m excited to see how big we can make this.”
Neeraj and JSW Sports aim to make the event an annual part of the global athletics calendar, with plans to expand into other track and field disciplines in the future.
Adille Sumariwalla, outgoing president of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), explained that hosting an invitational featuring the world’s best javelin throwers makes sense, especially given the sport’s surge in popularity in India following Neeraj’s gold in Tokyo.
World Athletics President Lord Sebastian Coe also expressed his support: “World Athletics is excited to back this new event, which will give fans in India the chance to see their heroes compete at home and showcase India’s ability to host gold-standard events.”
