Android 16 Beta Builds Reportedly on Track; Expected Release Dates Leak

Google launched the first Android 16 Developer Preview in November 2024, followed by Developer Preview 2 in December, allowing developers to test new features and APIs. The first Beta build is anticipated by the end of January 2025. A recent report has hinted at the potential release dates for Beta 1, Beta 2, and Beta 3, while the stable version of Android 16 is expected to debut in Q2 2025.

According to Android Authority, Android 16 Beta 3 is likely to be released on March 12. While Google has shared a general release timeline, specific dates for the Beta builds have not been officially confirmed. However, a comment spotted on Android Gerrit, a web-based code review platform, reportedly suggests the rollout dates for earlier Beta versions.

The comment references two key dates: January 22 and February 19, which are speculated to be the expected release dates for Beta 1 and Beta 2, respectively. Since these dates remain unofficial, users should interpret them with caution.

Android 16 May Enable Pixel Fingerprint Unlock with Screen Off

Google is set to release additional Beta versions of Android 16 as it moves toward Platform Stability, with the stable update slated for Q2 2025. Another developer-focused version with new APIs is expected in Q4 2025. Eligible devices for the Android 16 update include the Pixel 6a and newer models, such as the Pixel 9 series, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, Pixel 8 series, Pixel 8a, Pixel Fold, Pixel 7a, Pixel 7 series, and Pixel 6 series.

The second Developer Preview of Android 16 reportedly introduces Screen-off Fingerprint Unlock, allowing users to unlock their devices without waking the screen. Additionally, the update is expected to enhance adaptive refresh rate functionality for apps and introduce new haptic APIs for richer tactile feedback.
