Apple Exploring Humanoid and Non-Humanoid Robots for Smart Home Ecosystem, Mass Production Expected by 2028

Apple is reportedly exploring the development of both humanoid and non-humanoid robots for its future smart home ecosystem, according to TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The company is currently in the proof-of-concept phase of this project, and mass production is not expected to begin until 2028 or later. Apple is focusing more on the sensor-based technology and software integration for these robots, rather than their physical appearance. Interestingly, the company uses the term “anthropomorphic” instead of “humanoid” when referring to robots that resemble humans.

Apple has shown an open interest in the robotics field, publishing several papers on the technology, including one on the ELEGNT framework. This framework enables non-humanoid robots to express intentions and engage with users through expressive movements, as demonstrated by a lamp-shaped robot. However, these movements are not directly related to completing tasks.

Additionally, Kuo noted that Apple’s emphasis on robotics may be part of an effort to attract talent to the company. The company is also reportedly working on a foldable smartphone, which is still in the proof-of-concept stage.
