Apple iPhones to Support Starlink Satellite Connectivity in the US
Apple’s iPhones will now support SpaceX-owned Starlink’s direct-to-cell capability, enabling coverage from space, Reuters reported, citing T-Mobile, a key partner in the initiative.
Starlink Trial Underway
Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Germany-based T-Mobile are currently conducting trials of the Starlink cell network after receiving Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approval in November 2024.
The trial feature initially allows text messaging via satellite, with voice and data capabilities expected to follow later.
Before the latest iOS 18.3 software update, only select Android devices were eligible for testing the network. T-Mobile had previously listed Samsung models, including the Z Fold and S24, as compatible devices.
Apple, SpaceX, and T-Mobile’s Secretive Collaboration
According to Bloomberg, Apple, SpaceX, and T-Mobile had been working discreetly to integrate Starlink support into iPhone software.
In October 2024, SpaceX and T-Mobile received FCC approval to link Starlink satellites with direct-to-cell capability, providing cell coverage in hurricane-affected areas of North Carolina.
Apple already partners with Globalstar Inc., allowing users to send emergency texts when outside cellular range.
T-Mobile Launches Starlink Beta Test
T-Mobile has begun enrolling users for an early version of the Starlink satellite texting service, with beta testing now underway.
Selected participants received a message from T-Mobile stating:
“You’re in the T-Mobile Starlink beta. You can now stay connected with texting via satellite from virtually anywhere. To start experiencing coverage beyond, please update to iOS 18.3.”
Apple users will now have a new toggle switch in their cellular settings to manage satellite connectivity.
A T-Mobile spokesperson told Bloomberg that testing has started with select optimized smartphones, and the full launch will eventually support most modern smartphones.
The beta service has also been made available to Android 15 users, the latest version of Google’s operating system.
