In his farewell address, outgoing US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti reflected on the deep bonds forged between the two nations during his tenure. Serving as the 26th US envoy, Garcetti expressed pride in the strengthened diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties between the United States and India.In a heartfelt video message shared on social media, Garcetti spoke about his long-standing connection with India, a country he first visited as a child and later as a student. He expressed gratitude for the warmth and hospitality he received, describing India as “not just incredible, but unforgettable.”
“From the moment I landed in New Delhi to serve as the 26th U.S. Ambassador, India has felt like home,” he said. He also highlighted the dosti (friendship) and zindadili (zest for life) he experienced while traveling across the country.
Exploring India’s Rich Culture and Heritage
During his tenure, Garcetti traveled extensively, visiting 28 states and immersing himself in India’s diverse traditions. He recalled some of his most memorable experiences, including floating past the Ghats of Varanasi, crossing Meghalaya’s living root bridges, sailing through Kerala’s backwaters, and cheering for the Indian cricket team at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
“I’ve seen that fusion of ancient royalty and modern innovation in Hyderabad, celebrated the culture of Kolkata, and explored the incredible history of Chennai’s ancient temples,” he shared. He also noted the significance of launching the new US Consulate in Bengaluru, marking a “new beginning in Bangalore.”
Strengthening US-India Relations
Garcetti underscored the major milestones achieved between the US and India during his tenure, from vaccine distribution collaborations to technological advancements and business partnerships. He highlighted the growing cooperation between scientists, businesses, and students from both nations.
“We’ve seen our businesses trade together, our guardians train together, and our people celebrate together,” he said, emphasizing the shared aspirations and mutual respect between the two countries.
He further praised India’s spirit of innovation and progress, stating that the US and India share a common vision for the future. “The American and Indian dream, they’re two sides of the same coin,” he remarked.
A Heartfelt Goodbye
As he bid farewell, Garcetti expressed deep affection for India, calling it a place where he “learned to embrace life in full color” and where “humanity can understand its past and glimpse the future.”
He concluded his message with a nod to Bollywood, quoting the famous dialogue from Om Shanti Om: “Picture abhi baaki hai, mere dost!”
“Our relationship is truly an enduring story of love for the ages. And we are only getting started,” he affirmed, expressing confidence in the continued strengthening of US-India ties.
