Google May Be Redesigning Gemini Overlay Window on Android
Google appears to be testing a redesigned overlay window for its Gemini AI assistant on Android devices. A Reddit user recently shared a screenshot of the updated user interface, which appears when Gemini is activated via voice command or manually. Unlike the current large square box, the new overlay is a slim rectangular window featuring only three interactive icons.
Redesigned Gemini Overlay Spotted
Reddit user amitsama92 posted in the GooglePixel subreddit about the revamped Gemini overlay screen. According to the post, they were using a Pixel 9 Pro with the Gemini for Android app version 1.0.686588308 and had a Gemini Advanced subscription. It is unclear whether these specific factors enabled access to the new interface.
Based on the shared screenshot, the updated overlay consists of a thin, rectangular floating window with a neon pink-and-blue glow outlining its edges. Inside the box, a plus icon appears near the left, while a microphone icon and Gemini Live icon are positioned on the right. The phrase “Ask Gemini” is displayed beside the plus icon.
Key Differences in the New Interface
•No Greeting Message: The new overlay lacks the greeting text seen in the current version.
•Missing Full-Screen Button: The button in the top-right corner to expand the interface is absent.
•Color Change: The dark grey box has been replaced by a white background.
•No Sparkle Icon: The sparkle icon, previously located at the top of the overlay, is gone.
Limited Availability
The redesigned overlay has not been widely rolled out. Gadgets 360 reported that their staff did not encounter the new interface on several Android devices. While some Reddit users confirmed seeing the update, others stated they still had the old interface.
Early Testing Phase?
Given the lack of an official announcement from Google, it’s likely that the redesigned Gemini overlay is in a limited testing phase. Tech outlet 9to5Google also noted that they could not find any devices with the updated feature. For now, it remains unclear when, or if, the new interface will be made available to all users.
