At CES 2025, Google showcased new AI-powered features for its Google TV platform, driven by its Gemini models. These enhancements aim to make smart TVs more interactive and user-friendly. According to the tech giant, Gemini will upgrade Google Assistant, enabling it to summarize news, search media content, and answer a wide range of queries related to streaming platforms and the device itself.
New AI Features Coming to Google TV
In a blog post, Google outlined the upcoming AI-driven capabilities for its Google TV operating system. Powered by Gemini, these features aim to make interacting with smart TVs more intuitive. Accessible via the built-in voice assistant, these enhancements will improve user experience without replacing Google Assistant; instead, Gemini will serve as an upgrade to it.
With this integration, users can engage in natural conversations with their devices, making it easier to search for shows or movies using detailed queries.
Expanded Capabilities and Lower System Requirements
Google also revealed that the voice assistant will now handle a broader range of topics, such as travel, health, space, and history. For example, users can ask about ISRO’s latest rocket launch and receive relevant YouTube videos with contextual explanations.
Another highlight is the news overview feature, where the AI assistant can summarize major headlines and present them upon request. Additionally, users can generate custom art for their TV screensavers and control smart home devices even when the TV is in ambient mode.
The company also announced that the Android TV OS has been optimized to lower RAM requirements, potentially broadening the range of devices capable of running these features.
Availability
Google confirmed that these new AI features will begin rolling out on select Google TV devices later this year. However, there is no timeline yet for a global release.
