Amid rising cases of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) infections in India, and following reports of outbreaks in China, health experts are advising people to remain calm.
A recent study has highlighted the impact of HMPV on pediatric health. Conducted by researchers from the Regional Level Viral Research & Diagnostic Laboratory (RVRDL) and the Department of Microbiology and Pediatrics at the Jawaharlal Institute of Post-Graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) in Puducherry, the study identified new HMPV lineages, A2.2.1 and A2.2.2.
The researchers noted a significant outbreak of HMPV between November 2022 and March 2023, with a 9.6% positivity rate among tested patients. HMPV has been recognized as a major cause of acute respiratory infections in children under five years of age.
