IND-W vs WI-W: Deepti Sharma’s record-breaking five-wicket haul leads India Women to a 5-wicket victory in the 3rd ODI, as the hosts complete a 3-0 series whitewash over the West Indies
Deepti Sharma’s record-breaking five-wicket haul guided India Women to a five-wicket victory over the West Indies in the third and final ODI, completing a 3-0 series whitewash on Friday in Vadodara. Deepti took 6/31, becoming the first Indian woman cricketer to claim more than one five-wicket haul in the 50-over format. Alongside her, Renuka Singh contributed with 4/29, helping India dismiss the West Indies for 162 in 38.5 overs. In response, India faced an early wobble, but vital contributions from captain Harmanpreet Kaur (32), Jemimah Rodrigues (29), Deepti (39*), and Richa Ghosh (23*) ensured the team chased down the target in 28.2 overs.
Opting to bat first, the West Indies had a rough start as Thakur dismissed both openers for ducks in the very first over. Deepti soon joined the attack, and the Windies women struggled to get going. Thakur’s precise line and length broke through the top order, while Deepti used her flight and guile to outfox the West Indies batters.
The West Indies mounted a recovery with a 97-run partnership between Chinelle Henry (61) and Shemaine Campbelle (46), helping them surpass the 160 mark. Without this stand, the visitors might have been bowled out for under 100. Apart from Henry and Campbelle, only Aaliyah Alleyne (21) reached double digits as the West Indies’ batting struggles persisted. In response, India found themselves in trouble at 73/4, but Deepti’s experience guided them to victory with plenty of overs to spare.
Mandhana, Deol falter
In-form opener Smriti Mandhana (4) was dismissed early, with Ashmini Munisar taking an unusual one-handed catch after seemingly misjudging what should have been a simple catch off Aaliyah Alleyne’s bowling. Mandhana, who has been in good form recently, failed to get to the pitch of the ball and was dismissed. One-down batter Deol followed suit, edging a delivery from Deandra Dottin outside the off-stump, which was caught by wicketkeeper Shemaine Campbelle.
Swashbuckling wicketkeeper-batter Richa remained not out when the winning runs were scored. Harmanpreet, in her brisk innings, struck seven boundaries and appeared set for a big score before being dismissed. Middle-order batter Jemimah also contributed with a solid knock.
