Kiran George battled through a nail-biting third game to secure a spot in the second round of the India Open Super 750, defeating Japan’s Yushi Tanaka 21-19, 14-21, 27-25 in an intense hour and 11 minutes on Tuesday. Despite flashes of his old tendency to let leads slip, George stayed composed, saved three match points, and ultimately converted his fourth, dropping his racket in relief.

Fighting Old Habits

Throughout the match, there were moments when George’s struggles with closing out games resurfaced, evident from his frustrated body language and expressions. He narrowly salvaged the first game but faltered in the second. In the decider, after leading 20-18, he couldn’t capitalize on three match points, allowing Tanaka to push the game into extra points.

Reflecting on his performance, George admitted, “Last year, I had three or four tournaments where I was leading and had match points but lost. I’ve been working on the mental and physical aspects, simulating such situations in practice. I’m getting there; I just need more consistency.”

Staying Composed Under Pressure

At 20-18 in the third game, Tanaka leveled the score with two brilliant points, including a stunning crosscourt winner that left George visibly fatigued. Yet, the world No. 38 kept his cool, played aggressively, and pinned Tanaka deep in the backcourt before sealing the dramatic victory.

Late Entry, Early Preparation

George wasn’t initially part of the main draw but was promoted from the reserve list after withdrawals. Knowing his entry was likely, he arrived in Delhi early, which helped him prepare. “I was ready this time,” he said. “I arrived Saturday night, hoping to get in, and that preparation made a difference.”

A Tougher Test Ahead

Despite showing promise, George’s results on the circuit haven’t always matched expectations. However, his strong start in Delhi may signal a turning point. In the next round, he faces French rising star Alex Lanier, who stunned world champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn on day one, presenting George with a formidable challenge.
