Iranian authorities have lifted the ban on Meta’s WhatsApp and Google Play, marking the first step in easing internet restrictions, according to Iranian state media on Tuesday.

The Islamic Republic enforces some of the world’s strictest internet controls, with regular blocks on U.S.-based social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, which are often bypassed by tech-savvy Iranians using virtual private networks.

The IRNA news agency reported that a majority vote had been reached to remove restrictions on popular foreign platforms such as WhatsApp and Google Play, following a meeting led by President Masoud Pezeshkian.

“Iran has taken the first step in removing internet restrictions today,” IRNA quoted Iran’s Minister of Information and Communications Technology, Sattar Hashemi, as saying.
