Koneru Humpy Meets PM Modi: ‘An Unforgettable Experience’
Grandmaster Koneru Humpy, fresh off her victory at the FIDE Women’s World Rapid Chess Championship, met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday.
“It was an incredible honor and a once-in-a-lifetime privilege to meet our esteemed Prime Minister, Shri @narendramodi ji, alongside my family. The experience was truly unforgettable, filled with inspiration and encouragement. Thank you, sir, for this remarkable moment!” Humpy shared on X.
Responding to her post, PM Modi expressed his admiration, saying, “Glad to have met Koneru Humpy and her family. She is a sporting icon and a source of inspiration for aspiring players. Her sharp intellect and unwavering determination are evident. She has brought immense pride to India and redefined excellence.”
Humpy’s Triumph in New York
On December 29, Humpy staged a remarkable comeback to clinch her second FIDE Women’s World Rapid Championship title in New York. After starting the tournament with a loss, she rallied on Day 2 and surged to the top of the standings by Day 3.
The victory capped off a stellar year for Indian chess in 2024, with Humpy adding to the nation’s growing list of achievements. She previously won the World Rapid title in 2019.
“I’m very happy and excited because this is my second World Rapid title,” Humpy said during FIDE’s live feed. Reflecting on her career, she added, “Whenever I feel I’m falling behind, something miraculous happens, and I come back. That motivates me to keep competing.”
