OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Gov, a Self-Hosted AI Platform for US Government Agencies
OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Gov, a self-hosted version of its AI chatbot designed specifically for US Government agencies. The platform, announced on Tuesday, allows agencies to deploy ChatGPT within their internal cloud environments, ensuring compliance with government privacy, security, and data protection requirements.
In a blog post, OpenAI explained that ChatGPT Gov operates independently without needing to connect to the company’s servers, allowing agencies to securely process sensitive and classified information. The initiative aims to enhance public services and streamline government operations by providing AI-driven capabilities such as text interpretation, summarization, coding, and image analysis.
ChatGPT Gov can be hosted on Microsoft Azure’s commercial or Government cloud via Azure OpenAI Service and offers the same features as ChatGPT Enterprise, powered by the GPT-4o AI model. Agencies will also be able to build custom GPTs, share conversations within their workspace, and upload text and image files.
For security and management, OpenAI is providing an administrative console that allows IT teams and Chief Information Officers (CIOs) to manage users, groups, and custom GPTs, as well as implement single sign-on (SSO) authentication. OpenAI emphasized that ChatGPT Gov usage will be subject to its established policies.
The launch follows OpenAI’s recent Stargate Project initiative, which aims to expand AI infrastructure within the US in collaboration with technology providers and equity funders.
