Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday applauded Grandmaster Koneru Humpy for clinching the FIDE Women’s World Rapid Chess Championship title.

“Congratulations to @humpy_koneru on winning the 2024 FIDE Women’s World Rapid Championship! Her grit and brilliance continue to inspire millions. This victory is even more historic as it marks her second World Rapid Championship title, making her the only Indian to achieve this remarkable feat,” he shared on X.

Humpy staged a stunning comeback in New York on Sunday to claim her second World Rapid title. After a shaky start with a loss on the opening day, she bounced back strongly on Day 2 and surged to the top on Day 3, emerging victorious from a competitive field.

The year 2024 has already been exceptional for Indian chess, and Humpy’s triumph added another milestone to the nation’s achievements. She previously won the championship in 2019.

“I’m very happy and excited because this is my second World Rapid title. I also won in 2019,” Humpy shared during FIDE’s live broadcast after her win. “In my career, whenever I feel like I’m losing momentum, something miraculous happens, and I manage a comeback. That’s what motivates me to keep competing.”

Reflecting on her journey, Humpy, who first won the title in 2019 after returning from a maternity break, expressed gratitude to her family. “It’s probably too late in India for people to be watching, but my family will be. I want to thank my parents for their tremendous support and my husband. It’s not easy to pursue a professional career in India after marriage and having a child. But my husband has been incredibly supportive, and my parents took care of my daughter while I traveled. All of this made it possible for me to achieve this success,” she said.
