Rohit Sharma faces criticism after India’s struggles in Melbourne; former BCCI selector remarks, ‘Captain plays a crucial role’

Rohit Sharma Criticized for Poor Form and Captaincy in Border-Gavaskar Trophy

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has faced scrutiny for his underwhelming performance with the bat and as a captain during the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The veteran opener’s struggles have raised questions about his contribution to the team in both capacities.

Former India chief selector MSK Prasad, commenting on the Melbourne Test, expressed concern over Rohit’s “ordinary” batting form and tactical decisions as captain. Prasad also emphasized the connection between a captain’s individual performance and the overall team performance.

MSK Prasad Critiques Rohit Sharma

Speaking during Day 2 of the Boxing Day Test, Prasad said, “His batting has been ordinary since the Test series against New Zealand, and he arrived in Australia without any form. In our last two series wins in Australia, Virat Kohli led from the front in one, and when we were bowled out for 36 in Adelaide during the last series, Ajinkya Rahane revived the team with a century at the MCG.”

Prasad added, “Captaincy directly impacts team performance. Unfortunately, Rohit hasn’t been proactive and is struggling. When Sam Konstas was on the attack, Rohit stuck with Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj for 11 consecutive overs instead of trying alternative options.”

Rohit Sharma’s Recent Struggles in Test Cricket

Rohit’s recent form in Test cricket has been lackluster. He managed just 42 runs in four innings against Bangladesh and scored 91 runs in the three-match series against New Zealand. In the ongoing series against Australia, Rohit has scored only 22 runs across four innings.

During the first innings of the fourth Test, Rohit returned to the opening position but failed to make an impact, getting dismissed for just 3 runs.
