Rohit Sharma, who withdrew from the Sydney Test due to his “poor form,” emphasized that the Indian captaincy should be earned.

When asked about who he believes could be the next captain of India, Rohit responded on Star Sports: “It’s hard to say. It’s very difficult to predict. There are many talented players, but I want them to first understand the importance of cricket and the significance of this position.”

He added, “They’re new players. I know they should be given responsibility, but they need to earn it. Let them play hard-fought cricket for the next few years and prove themselves.”

Rohit described becoming India’s captain as a significant honour, stating, “I’m here now, Bumrah is here, Virat was here before me, and MS Dhoni was here before him. Everyone has earned it.”

“No one has been handed it on a silver platter. It’s something that should be earned through hard work,” he said.

While acknowledging the abundance of talent in the team, Rohit pointed out that becoming India’s captain is no easy task. “There’s pressure, but it’s a huge honour. Our history and the way we play cricket carry great responsibility. So, let them work hard and earn it.”

In Rohit’s absence, Jasprit Bumrah has stepped up and led the team effectively. Rohit praised Bumrah, saying, “He’s been exceptional as a leader, guiding India to victory in the Perth Test and performing well in the current Sydney Test.”

He also acknowledged Bumrah’s evolution as a player, adding, “I’ve been watching him for the past 11 years, and his progress has been remarkable. His game and mindset have developed significantly. The way he bowls, the world is watching. He’s become stronger with each passing year.”
