United States President Donald Trump announced a groundbreaking $100 billion joint venture between SoftBank Group, OpenAI, and Oracle Corporation to invest in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, with plans to expand the fund to $500 billion, Bloomberg reported.
Massive AI Investment Unveiled
Speaking at the Roosevelt Room in the White House on January 21 (January 22 IST), Trump emphasized the historic scale of the investment.
“We’re starting off with tremendous investment coming into our country at levels that nobody’s really ever seen before,” Trump told reporters.
The corporate venture, dubbed “Stargate,” is set to reshape AI infrastructure development.
$500 Billion Fund for AI Infrastructure
Trump was joined by SoftBank Chairman & CEO Masayoshi Son, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and Oracle Executive Chairman Larry Ellison for the announcement.
Masayoshi Son stated that the joint venture would deploy an initial $100 billion immediately, with a goal of expanding to at least $500 billion. The funds will be used to build new AI infrastructure for OpenAI, including data centers and physical campuses. Son will serve as Stargate’s chairman.
Funding Sources for Stargate
The initial investment will come from:
•SoftBank
•OpenAI
•Oracle
•Abu Dhabi state investor MGX
Who Will Lead Stargate?
According to Bloomberg, SoftBank and OpenAI are the lead partners.
•SoftBank will oversee financing
•OpenAI will manage operations
Additionally, Arm Holdings, Microsoft, Nvidia, Oracle, and OpenAI will provide the necessary technology for the initiative.
Trump’s Role in the Venture
The initiative aligns with Trump’s broader strategy to solidify U.S. leadership in AI.
•His administration will accelerate the permit process and ease regulations to encourage private-sector investment.
•The project will be spearheaded by AI-crypto czar David Sacks and advisor Elon Musk.
•Trump mentioned using emergency declarations and executive actions to fast-track construction projects and ensure access to energy for AI infrastructure.
Scope and Execution of Stargate
The full scope of the project remains unclear. However, Larry Ellison highlighted AI’s transformative potential for Americans.
He revealed that some data centers are already under construction, with OpenAI preparing to train its next AI model.
In an interview with Fox News, Ellison stated that Stargate had been in development for a long time, with the first data centers already being built in Texas.
Skepticism Around Stargate
Despite the ambitious announcement, some analysts question whether Stargate represents a substantial leap beyond previous AI infrastructure commitments by these companies.
