Former India cricketer Vinod Kambli, currently admitted to the ICU of a private hospital in Thane district, developed a fever on Tuesday but remains in stable condition, according to doctors treating him.
Dr. Vivek Trivedi, who leads the medical team overseeing Kambli’s care, stated that the 52-year-old is responding well to treatment for a urinary tract infection, for which he was admitted to Akruti Hospital near Bhiwandi on Saturday (December 21).
Doctors had planned to conduct an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan on the former cricketer. However, the procedure has been delayed due to his fever, and a decision will be made later, Dr. Trivedi said. The MRI was deemed necessary after earlier medical examinations revealed brain clots.
Vinod Kambli is expected to be moved out of the ICU within a day or two and discharged in about four days, Dr. Vivek Trivedi said.
The Mumbai-based former cricketer’s condition was critical four days ago due to a severe urinary infection that had caused pus to accumulate in his bladder. The pus was removed upon his hospital admission.
Dr. Trivedi noted that remaining at home longer could have worsened Kambli’s condition, as his blood pressure was fluctuating when he was brought in. However, his condition is now stable.
“His condition will be closely monitored for the next 24 hours before a decision is made on shifting him out of the ICU,” he added.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and the Shrikant Shinde Foundation, led by his MP-son, have extended their support to Kambli.
Following instructions from Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, his Officer on Special Duty (OSD), Mangesh Chiwte, visited the hospital to check on Vinod Kambli’s health condition, according to an official statement issued by the deputy CM’s office in Thane on Tuesday night.
Chiwte also interacted with the hospital’s medical staff to ensure that Kambli receives the best possible care during his treatment.
Kalyan Lok Sabha MP Shrikant Shinde, son of Eknath Shinde, announced financial assistance of ₹5 lakh for Kambli. The support will be provided through the Dr. Shrikant Shinde Foundation next week. Chiwte added that Shrikant Shinde has assured Kambli and his family of additional assistance in the future.
Kambli expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the state’s compassionate leadership, particularly Eknath Shinde and Shrikant Shinde, for their concern and support. The former cricketer also expressed a wish to meet the Deputy CM in person to thank him for the assistance provided during his time of need, according to the statement.
Eknath Shinde and Shrikant Shinde are expected to visit Kambli at the hospital soon, the release added.
