WhatsApp is introducing a reverse image search feature to combat the spread of misinformation online. Initially spotted in the WhatsApp Android beta app, the feature is now available on WhatsApp Web Beta, as reported by WABetainfo.

With this new feature, users will be able to verify the authenticity of an image shared with them by utilizing Google’s reverse image search. This tool aims to help users determine whether an image has been edited, manipulated, or taken out of context.

The best part is that users won’t need to download the image to their desktop. WhatsApp will provide a shortcut in the web application to initiate the reverse image search directly. Once a user selects the option to search for an image on the web, WhatsApp will upload the image to Google with the user’s consent, launching the reverse search process in their default browser. Notably, the entire process will be managed by Google, and WhatsApp will not have access to the image’s contents.

Additionally, WhatsApp has introduced an in-app document scanning feature for its iOS app in the latest update (version 24.25.80). This functionality allows users to scan documents directly from the document-sharing menu, eliminating the need for external scanning tools.

By selecting the “Scan” option in the menu, users can activate their device’s camera to capture documents. The app automatically detects margins, but users can manually adjust them for better framing and clarity. This streamlined integration makes WhatsApp a more comprehensive platform for communication and document management.
