Apple Highlights Siri’s Privacy-First Approach Amid Rising Data Security Concerns
Apple reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding user data processed by Siri in a statement released on Wednesday. This announcement comes shortly after the tech giant agreed to settle a proposed class-action lawsuit alleging that Apple recorded private conversations with its voice assistant and sold the data to third parties, including advertisers. Apple strongly emphasized that data from Siri interactions has never been used for such purposes and outlined several privacy-focused measures implemented in Siri’s design.
Apple Denies Selling Siri User Data
In a newsroom post, Apple reiterated its dedication to privacy through technologies like data minimization, on-device intelligence, and transparency. While the company did not directly address the pending lawsuit, it refuted the allegations.
“Apple has never used Siri data to build marketing profiles, never made it available for advertising, and never sold it to anyone for any purpose. We are constantly developing technologies to make Siri even more private and will continue to do so,” the statement read.
Apple detailed several privacy safeguards integrated into Siri:
1.On-Device Processing: Siri performs most tasks on the device, such as reading messages or providing search suggestions. Apple clarified that the content of messages does not leave the device, as it is not necessary to complete requests.
2.Audio Request Handling: On newer devices equipped with a Neural Engine, Siri processes audio-based user requests entirely on the device. Apple also noted that audio recordings are made only when users opt to share them for improving Siri’s functionality.
3.Data Minimization: Siri collects minimal data for requests that require real-time processing via Apple servers. Apple stated that such data is not linked to a user’s Apple account but tracked using a random identifier to maintain privacy.
4.Private Cloud Compute: Apple uses its recently launched Private Cloud Compute for certain intelligence-based Siri features. The company explained that the cloud server processes data temporarily without storing it and ensures that no data is accessible to Apple.
Through these measures, Apple aims to strengthen Siri’s privacy protections and reinforce its reputation as a leader in user data security.
