OpenAI Briefly Introduced New Custom Instruction Options in ChatGPT
On Thursday, OpenAI appeared to have briefly introduced expanded customisation options for its Custom Instructions feature in ChatGPT. Screenshots shared by several users showed new fields allowing for greater personalisation, such as adding nicknames, professions, and personality traits. However, the feature was quickly removed, suggesting it may have been released prematurely.
Expanded Personalisation Features
Users on X (formerly Twitter) shared glimpses of the updated Custom Instructions tool, which builds on the existing feature that lets users tailor ChatGPT’s responses. Previously, users could specify response preferences—like tone and level of detail—through a single text field. The screenshots revealed new fields for nicknames, professions, and personality traits like “witty,” “opinionated,” and “Gen Z,” offering more granular control over ChatGPT’s behavior.
Custom Instructions are designed to save users from repeatedly entering the same preferences, streamlining interactions by ensuring the chatbot consistently aligns with their desired style and tone.
Feature Rollout and Removal
Despite the excitement, the feature was short-lived. Users noted that it disappeared shortly after its discovery. According to TechCrunch, OpenAI may have unintentionally activated the update before it was fully ready for release.
The impact of these added personality traits on ChatGPT’s responses remains unclear, as the feature could not be independently verified by Gadgets 360. At the time of reporting, the feature was no longer visible in the chatbot.
What’s Next?
It remains uncertain when OpenAI will officially roll out the enhanced Custom Instructions. If implemented, such features could significantly refine user interactions, offering a more personalised and dynamic experience with AI.
