YouTube is reportedly testing a new feature in its Android app called “Play Something,” designed to play a random video when users are unsure of what to watch. The feature appears as a floating action button (FAB) with white text on a black background. Initially, this feature was tested exclusively for YouTube Shorts, but it is now being expanded to regular YouTube videos as well.

Discovered in the YouTube for Android app version 19.50 by 9to5Google, the feature is still in the testing phase and has not been officially announced. Tapping the Play Something button starts a video in the YouTube Shorts window or plays regular YouTube videos in portrait mode. The video interface includes options to like, dislike, comment, and share, along with a timeline scrubber at the bottom of the screen.

However, the Play Something floating action button (FAB) is reported to disappear once the YouTube mini-player is activated.

In addition to the FAB, YouTube is testing several new features in recent weeks. One of these includes new vertical scroll gestures for the mobile app, which could alter how users navigate and interact with content. Swiping up on a video is said to automatically take the user to the next video, instead of minimizing to the default view, similar to the gesture system in YouTube Shorts.

The platform has also expanded its AI-powered auto-dubbing feature, which automatically transcribes and translates YouTube videos between English and other languages. This expansion now includes information and knowledge-based content, aiming to help creators reach viewers who speak different languages and bridge communication gaps.
